Sir Buns Writes ;
I like to think that I'm a pretty modern, radical guy but find that I still old fashioned about some things, like showing respect when someone dies. Recently I was a bit shocked to hear of an extended family member's demise and that he was to have a "Direct Cremation". That is, no funeral at all. Maybe that is what he wanted. But he was in his 80s with two offspring and a surviving wife and they must have been married for some 50+ years, so I would have expected at least them to show up on the day. It is not as if they are short of money.
I guess this is the way it is going now, like online shopping. Amazon van drivers will be calling at the homes of the deceased with 6' X 2' cardboard boxes, with a thumbs down logo on the side, collecting corpses. Or some van man from a company called "Just Heat" will arrive and a cheerfully say: "Hello, I've just come to blowtorch your grandad to charcoal in your back yard".
Yes, reverence for the departed is not what it used to be. And ditto for the living: as we see that during this time of pandemic so many people cannot be arsed to even wear a mask in a shop or on a bus. To get yourself remembered nowadays one needs to be a soap opera star or a serial murderer. Although my plan is for people still to be talking about me 20 years or more after my passing, saying things like: "I haven't forgotten that B******, he snuffed it owing me shedloads of money!". Aye.
IMHO,
SBK
